401(k) and IRA? FREE Portfolio Check up!

Do you ever get that feeling that your 401(k), 403(b) or IRA is not well, has a fever and maybe sick? Is your retirement plan performance anemic or even going south?

There is currently $28 Trillion in 401(k) funds in the U.S. That’s great news for retirees, but unfortunately, retirement money does not come with instructions. And, even worse, when you roll it over to an IRA, you become the financial manager.

Not only are employees not educated about how to construct a 401(k) portfolio, the mutual fund options within the plan can be under-performing or terrible funds. Couple the lack of education and poor fund options and you have a 401(k)/ IRA disaster waiting to happen!

Did you know that if permitted by your company sponsored 401(k), in-service transfers can be rolled over into a self-directed IRA as long as you are 59 ½ or older?

If done correctly, no tax will be triggered, so it is imperative to work with someone that is well versed in doing these transfers.

Why would someone 59 ½ or older do an in-service transfer? Here are some of the reasons:

  • More flexible investment choices that may not be offered in the current 401(k)
  • Diversify concentrated positions – some plans have limited investment options

Some plans specify that certain contributions must be invested in company stock and one may accumulate too much in one asset, which is dangerous. Remember Enron!

Consolidated IRA’s – by consolidating with one Investment Company, it allows for better performance monitoring, rebalancing and formulating income strategies.
